In line with the Review of Public Adminstration (RPA), the Local Health and Social Care Groups (LHSCGs) were stood down and seven Local Commissioning Groups (LCGs) established in April 2007.
It is proposed that the number of LCGs will be reduced to five to cover the same geographical area of the five Health and Social Care Trusts.
LCGs were set up to actively engage GPs, other primary care professionals and the voluntary and community sector in the planning and redesign of services to secure better health and social care for the communities they serve.
In addition, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) is committed to a stakeholder-led service that is centred on the needs of patients, clients, carers and the wider population. To achieve this it is recognised that the existing systems for involving stakeholders will have to be strengthened. To this end a new "Engage" website has been established to encourage wider public involvement and consultation.
